Physician/Staff Michele Columbo, M.D.Asthma, Allergy and Immunology
Dr. Columbo has been in an independent, private practice in Bryn Mawr and Paoli/Berwyn, Pennsylvania, since 2000. Dr. Columbo’s undergraduate education at the Liceo Classico Umberto I in Naples, Italy was focused on Liberal Arts including literature, Latin, ancient Greek, philosophy, and history. He attained his medical degree from the Università di Napoli Federico II (est. 1224), Italy. At the same institution, he was later an Assistant Professor (tenure) in the Department of Medicine for more than eight years. While in Italy, Dr. Columbo became a certified specialist in Allergy and Clinical Immunology at the Università di Firenze (est. 1321) and in Rheumatology at the Università di Roma La Sapienza (est. 1303). In the U.S., Dr. Columbo completed a Residency program in Internal Medicine at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, became board certified in this specialty, and recertified in 2009. He spent more than six years in the Allergy and Clinical Immunology Division of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. There he performed research as a Research Fellow and Visiting Assistant Professor and returned to complete his Clinical Fellowship. Dr. Columbo is board certified in Allergy and Immunology and was recertified in 2011 and 2021. Dr. Columbo has co-authored 107 publications (including 46 abstracts) mainly focused on the mechanisms of allergic inflammation in mast cells isolated from human tissues and human peripheral blood basophils. Such publications, 80% of them in English and 20% in Italian, include original research articles in the Journal of Immunology, Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, American Review of Respiratory Diseases, and Blood. He has been a speaker at international conferences and received numerous research grants and awards. He was a member of the Main Line Hospitals Institutional Review Board for fourteen years. While in full time clinical practice, Dr. Columbo has initiated, conducted and completed six clinical research studies that have received financial support from a local non-profit foundation, were registered on clinicaltrials.gov, and whose results were published in peer reviewed journals. He has been a Principal Investigator in pharmaceutical company-sponsored clinical studies and is a reviewer for several medical journals. Dr. Columbo is a Fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. He is the System Chief of the Division of Allergy and Immunology at Main Line Health. He is the Founder and President of the Philadelphia Allergy Alliance and a past President of the Philadelphia Allergy Society. He is a member of the Board of Directors and Scientific Committee of the Sharpe-Strumia Research Foundation of Bryn Mawr Hospital.
